The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), functions as a member of the team as assigned. Demonstrates sound techniques in complex nursing care procedures and basic care of the acutely ill and chronic patients in all areas of the VHSO's health system to include Mental Health, Primary Care, and Eye Clinic.
Duties
Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The duties of the Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse include, but are not limited to: Provides patient and family education regarding common disease processes, medications, the patient's condition, procedures, and preventive health care; reinforces health teaching initiated by the multidisciplinary treatment team. Recognizes the need for and initiates action in emergencies, i.e., cardiac/respiratory arrest, seizures, and/or assaultive behavior. Promptly seek the assistance of the RN or MD/DO and assist in resuscitation procedures in cardiac and/or pulmonary arrest. Understands the patient's chart, medical history, and nursing plan of care for the purpose of distinguishing between patients and communicating appropriately about the provision of care. Performs nursing procedures such as catheterizations, nasogastric feeding, suctioning, application of sterile dressings, and suture removal and to initiate and abide by isolation procedure. Maintains precise adherence to basic principles of asepsis, safety, and universal precautions to provide a safe environment for patients, families, and employees. Assists the physician and/or nurse with therapeutic or diagnostic procedures, including skin biopsies, joint aspirations, phlebotomies, pap smears, pelvic examinations, minor eye surgeries, and minor GU procedures. Obtains and arranges necessary equipment. Correctly positions the patient, provides information, and reassurance to the patient. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, subject to change based on the needs of the facility. Recruitment/Relocation Incentives (Sign-on Bonus): Not Authorized. Education
(i) Knowledge and skill in performing support duties for complex diagnostic tests and/or specialized practices or procedures, which include preparing the patient, assisting in the diagnostic examination, preparing and handling specialized instruments or other specialized equipment, and monitoring the patient's condition before, during, and following the procedure. Serves as a preceptor in orienting, educating, and training less experienced LPNs/LVNs or NAs/HTs related to support duties for these more complex, specialized tests/procedures. (j) Actively seeks out educational opportunities to enhance nursing knowledge and skills, sharing new knowledge gained with other staff to improve and advance nursing practice. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-03 to GS-04. May require standing, lifting, carrying, sitting, stooping, bending, puling, and pushing. May be required to wear personal protective equipment and undergo annual TB screening or testing as conditions of employment. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
